Gary Flake, a long time Technical Fellow at Microsoft, sent me an invite to his new Clipboard service today. The company has been on my radar for a while now, but they’ve kept things pretty quiet. Today was the first time I was able to see what they’ve been working on.
It’s an internet clipping and bookmarking service, sort of Delicious meets Pinterest. There have been scores of these types of startups before, but none of them were quite efficient or beautiful enough. At first and second glance, Clipboard looks like a winner.
With a click of your mouse you can highlight any part of a web page (it helps you by grabbing obvious content areas, and save it to your clipboard. The usual stuff, tagging and annotation, is available if you want. You can then make the clips private or public, share them, etc. And you can view them in a variety of ways, including a boring list or a Pinterest-style layout.
It has some real bugs still – it doesn’t grab posts from TechCrunch well, for example. And when I grabbed a screen from the MoMa website it showed a 404 error on Clipboard (meaning it’s pulling it real time from the original source, I guess, not taking a static picture of what you saw at a certain time).
But…It’s GOOD. Really good. A definite keeper. I’ve already used up most of my invites, but if you can find someone who’s using the service already, hit them up for one.
See GeekWire for their take.
Update: From comments:
Clipboard engineer here.
Clips are not just screenshots – they preserve the original markup and style. In real time, we translate the selected portion of the HTML and CSS of the source page into a self-contained unit that is both compressed and can safely coexist with other clips. For example, notice that all the links are preserved in this clip:
http://www.clipboard.com/clip/LR-B8x4FlQsi9NHM0YYHNxQZ806b3pRw61HeWe even preserve embed and objects.

As the first to comment here, any chance you could send me an invite?!? 😉
@matthewdbenson
yeah. i also asked for a bunch more, if i get them i’ll offer them here. It would be great if you could use a couple of your invites for people here, too.
I use Evernote, would love to see the differences. Please send me an invite. I’d definitely pass on invites to friends. Thanks Mike!

Anyone who can give me an invitation? Thanks a lot! my email: he@36kr.com
Looks nice, but how is it any better than Evernote?
The retrieval of your notes looks a lot more compelling than Evernote. That’s one problem I’ve always had with Evernote… I store a ton of stuff in there but I only ever go through my notes if I’m explicitly searching for something I know I stuffed in there. In general, they don’t have a good user experience for going back to look through your notes. I really hope Clipboard solves that.
To go to an extreme, @nbashaw once described Evernote as “the place ideas go to die.” I loved that description.
If anyone has an invite I’d greatly appreciate it. guayosr[at]gmail[dot]com
Not sure if you have used https://gimmebar.com. But wondering what might be the deference between the two. Like which might be better or have better features?
I’m using GimmeBar right now, and I’m loving it. It seems Clipboard will be a viable alternative, whichever one integrates drag-to-share (no hotkey/bookmarklet) first has my vote. GimmeBar has already responded to a feature request for this saying they are working on implementing it.
yeah thats one of the fews thing I would like, and maybe a way to make sub folders.
You say it’s a “Delicious meets Pinterest”. It looks a lot like Pinterest to me from the screen shot. How is it different?
My thoughts exactly.
Also you said “And when I grabbed a screen from the MoMa website it showed a 404 error on Clipboard (meaning it’s pulling it real time from the original source, I guess, not taking a static picture of what you saw at a certain time).”
That sounds to be like a usability nightmare. I sure hope they start hosting those images soon…
was just a bug, already talked to them about it.

This is Greg from Clipboard. I posted a clarifying comment about how the clipping process work, but it seems to be stuck “awaiting moderation”. Can you help me out?
Thanks

There is something I’ve been working on called copyto.co which does pretty much the same thing and has been around for a while now. What should I do to get this kind of an attention? 🙂

No need to beg for a beta invite when you can just go sign up yourself. According to a blog post on Clipboard’s blog website you can go to this article http://www.technologyreview.com/web/38862/ and click on the link to Clipboard and get an invite. I just did it and it worked. Brought me straight to a registration form. This will work for this week only. You’re all welcome. 😉
cheers mate – surprised more people haven’t seen this!
Please send me an invite. Jdroid1976 at mail.com
Ah.. too many note takers these days.
I have used Evernote, Springpad, Simplenote, Gimmebar and lot more!
Simplenote seems to be a better solution for me, especially its simplicity rocks.
Yup I’m in!
I would like an invitation, too, please! Thanks in advance! vastila [at] gmail[ dot] com
Actually in the same space like Memonic (http://memonic.com) which does this for a while already very nicely.

I’ve got some invites to clipboard. Ask me on twitter @juliengomez.
Kudos, Gary! Been looking forward to seeing this. Having watched the killer tech that came out of Live Labs, there is no doubt some great stuff is under the hood here as much as it is on the surface. Cheers, CG

…and you found no privacy issues whatsoever, Mike?
Just in case someone’s still reading (yeah, I am hoping-against-hope you’ll still read this) watch out for these ‘nice lines’ in their terms of service:
“3. User Content License Grant
By posting any User Content on the Service, you expressly grant, and you represent and warrant that you have all rights necessary to grant, to Clipboard a royalty-free, sublicensable, transferable, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide license to use, reproduce, modify, publish, list information regarding, edit, translate, distribute, syndicate, publicly perform, publicly display, and make derivative works of all such User Content and your name, voice, and/or likeness as contained in your User Content, in whole or in part, and in any form, media or technology, whether now known or hereafter developed, for use in connection with the Service and Clipboard’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each User of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your User Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such User Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under this Agreement.”
When you read their definition of the User Content in the previous section you realize that what Clipboard is actually saying is: “ALL YOUR CLIPS & DATA ARE BELONG TO US!” – albeit, in more sophisticated legalese, of course. Very Facebook-like, that one.
Now, let’s check their Privacy Policy, shall we?
“Clear Gifs Information: When you use the Service, we may employ clear gifs (also known as web beacons) which are used to track the online usage patterns of our users anonymously. In addition, we may also use clear gifs in HTML-based emails sent to our users to track which emails are opened by recipients. The information is used to enable more accurate reporting, improve the effectiveness of our marketing, and make Clipboard better for our users.
Third Party Services: Clipboard uses third party analytics services, including Google Analytics and Mixpanel to help understand use of the Service. These services collect the information sent by your browser as part of a web page request, including cookies and your IP address. Their use of such information is governed by their Privacy Policy.”
Beacons? Third-party advertising? More Privacy Policies? More beacons?
Uh, wat?
Just saying, if you can call out Facebook for doing the same, you should be doing the same with these guys, too.
I use the share on tumblr app and have a private tumblr page I use to be able to do this and it looks even better. Give me some venture capital money now!

Hi,
I was so in love with Clipboard, I wrote an Android app for it!
Hoogli Clip lets you send clips to Clipboard.com from the sharing menus of all your favourite Android apps like web browsers and news readers.
It is free on Google Play and there is more info and an example clip here:
http://www.hoogli.com/clip/
I hope it is helpful for any Android users out there who are hanging on for the official App’s release.
Best regards,
Andrew Cox
